Recently, is appeared on Windows Update an Excel hotfix, the KB959995 update

But, on some computers, it is impossible to install... it simply fails, without any information

One of that computers, unfortunately, was my computer.... searching on Google, everybody was saying "you must reinstall office again".

But, i found a solution by myself:

First, download the patch from the Microsoft Website.

Run the patch and wait several minutes; after some time, you will get an error similar to "Impossible to find the installation files in E:"
Why? When I installed Office 2003 several years ago, I told him to save the installation files on E:
Over time, i added a new hdd, swapped partitions, and E: has become M:
E: has become an "unused space", so the patch is not able to find the installation files and it will fail

What to do? The easiest solution is making M: become E: again (I will write an howto on this, if requested)
If you managed to restore the original drive legger, you can go at the end of tutorial

If is not possible, you have to use the listool, downloading it from here.

After unzipping it, click on "move local installation source":

lis

And then select a drive that can accept the setup files:

lis

Now you are ready to install the patch. Run again the patch that you downloaded from the Microsoft website, wait several minutes, and you are done!

Eureka !!!!!

This worked for me, well it pointed me in the right direction.

I had copied all the Office CD's onto a large USB hard drive along with all my other major software that I would need to re-install should a drive go down.

All I needed to do was to plug in USB drive and the KB959995 updated perfectly.

Yessss!

Thank you very much for this very useful how-to. The stupid yellow shield had been bugging me for weeks and I didn't know how to get rid of it. Thanks again.

You are welcome, I had the same problem, and no solution on Google, so i had to find a way to get rid of the "updates available" shield :)

Typical bloody Microsoft.. Why the hell is this tool not on there kb troubleshooter site..

BTW there is a later tool direct from Microsoft that probably is the same thing..

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=10fa7aa3-695b-42c3-9045-b812ba0fed3e&displaylang=en

I installed office on c: drive and that has never changed.. I did note however that after selecting c: in this application and then running MS update again that it actually went and started accessing my CD/dvd Rom, which happened due to other attempts to fix this problem had the office disc in the drive..

I had added another drive after installing office, but my dvd drive is still d:

so what is this actually touching to resolve this...

This is kind of a critical fix as MS update will NOT update anything else until it gets through these updates! you have to remove them from the list of updates or fix this problem.

Any way it worked yay for someone other then Microsoft as usual..
